Prepare your device to sell

Ten minutes at home makes the meetup quick and keeps your data yours. Choose your device for the steps.

Why this matters

A device that’s still signed in to your account stays locked to you, and we can’t buy it. Signing out turns that lock off. Away from home, newer phones can make you wait an hour to sign out, so do it before you leave.

iPhone

Before you leave home

  1. 1

    Back it up. Settings › [your name] › iCloud › iCloud Backup › Back Up Now, or back up to a computer.

  2. 2

    Sign out of your Apple Account at home, before you leave. Settings › [your name] › Sign Out. This turns off Find My. Away from home, iPhone can make you wait an hour to sign out, so it has to happen before you come. Using it right up to the meetup? Sign out right before you leave home.

    Move your SIM or eSIM to your new phone, if you haven’t.

  4. 4

    Charge it to at least half, so it stays on during the check.

  5. 5

    Don’t erase it yet. You’ll do that at the meetup, after the check. That way, if you decide to keep it, it’s exactly as you left it. Already erased it? That’s fine. Bring it as is.

At the meetup, after the check

You erase it while we watch. Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Erase All Content and Settings.

Bring

  • Your iPhone
  • Photo ID
  • The charger, if you have it. It’s optional and doesn’t change your price.
  • If it’s sealed: the box, unopened

Samsung Galaxy

Before you leave home

    Back it up. Settings › Accounts and backup › Back up data, or use Smart Switch.

  2. 2

    Remove your Google account (and Samsung account) at home, before you leave. Newer phones can block this away from home. Settings › Accounts and backup › Manage accounts.

  3. 3

    Take out your SIM and memory card and move them to your new phone.

  4. 4

    Charge it to at least half, so it stays on during the check.

  5. 5

    Don’t erase it yet. You’ll do that at the meetup, after the check. That way, if you decide to keep it, it’s exactly as you left it. Already erased it? That’s fine. Bring it as is.

At the meetup, after the check

You erase it while we watch. Settings › General management › Reset › Factory data reset.

Bring

  • Photo ID
  • Take out your SIM and memory card first.
  • If it’s sealed: the box, unopened

Google Pixel

Before you leave home

  1. 1

    Back it up. Settings › System › Backup.

  2. 2

    Remove your Google account at home, before you leave. Newer phones can block this away from home. Settings › Passwords, passkeys and accounts.

  3. 3

    Move your SIM or eSIM to your new phone, if you haven’t.

  4. 4

    Charge it to at least half, so it stays on during the check.

  5. 5

    Don’t erase it yet. You’ll do that at the meetup, after the check. That way, if you decide to keep it, it’s exactly as you left it. Already erased it? That’s fine. Bring it as is.

At the meetup, after the check

You erase it while we watch. Settings › System › Reset options › Erase all data (factory reset).

  • If it’s sealed: the box, unopened

iPad

Before you leave home

    Back it up. Settings › [your name] › iCloud › iCloud Backup › Back Up Now, or back up to a computer.

    Charge it to at least half, so it stays on during the check.

    Don’t erase it yet. You’ll do that at the meetup, after the check. That way, if you decide to keep it, it’s exactly as you left it. Already erased it? That’s fine. Bring it as is.

At the meetup, after the check

You erase it while we watch. System Settings › General › Transfer or Reset › Erase All Content and Settings. It needs internet to finish.

Bring

  • Your MacBook
  • The charger, if you said you’d bring it when you got your price.
  • Photo ID
  • If it’s sealed: the box, unopened

Apple Watch

Before you leave home

  1. 1

    Keep it paired. Bring the iPhone it’s paired with. We unpair it together at the meetup, after the check, which backs it up and erases it.

  2. 2

    Charge it to at least half, so it stays on during the check.

  3. 3

    Don’t unpair it yet. That way, if you decide to keep it, it’s exactly as you left it.

At the meetup, after the check

You unpair it while we watch. On the iPhone: Watch app › All Watches › info button › Unpair Apple Watch. This backs up, erases and removes the lock.
